I used the trams for the first time on Wednesday in Edinburgh. They were great, smooth, fast, and cheap. We went from the Interchange at the outskirts of Edinburgh on the way to the airport where you can link up with trains, busses or grab a taxi. We went into the centre of Edinburgh, Princess Street. The ride was smooth and quick with the staff being polite and friendly. We were in Edinburgh in around ten minutes. Very good service even though one of the ticket machines were not working and we had to cross the tracks to get the machine at the other side. By the time we did this and got our tickets there were two trams had come and gone into Edinburgh. It was OK as it was dry and not in the middle of winter.
I do believe you can get season tickets and pay by phone also. There is also a hop on hop off ticket, but we were just going to city centre and the Royal Mile for something, so it was not worth buying anything but a return ticket.
The cost of building the tramway might never be recovered, but it is a good service from where we caught it into the city centre.
I noticed some people got off the train and caught the tram from this interchange stop as they got right into Princess Street and didn't have to climb the hill.
For all the cost involved, I don't blame them. I would do the same.
The trains were having trouble getting traction on the rails at this station, not the trams, they had no problems with traction.
I doubt the cost of putting the trams in will ever be recovered, but it is a nice service to have.
Most cities ripped up their tram rails when buses started to run and cars started to become popular, now they wis they had kept them.
Same with the railways, they were in a hurry to rip them up, now they want to put railways back.
It maybe sounded like a good idea at the time, but it was lack of investment at the time and they are still not investing in railways. The new high speed railway they are planing to build in England in a waste of money, another white elliphant to sink millions of £s into for something that will only save 20 minutes at a huge cost. Not worth the money.
